"Love is a Drug" is a story that grabs you from start to finish, with twists that stay with you. The romance was a highlight. It was a great aspect of the story, with the MCs love and dedication to each other being particularly noteworthy. However, I found it inconsistent that they lived a comfortable (if not luxurious) middle class life with ambitions that seemed within reach, yet they repeatedly resorted to reckless decisions, such as theft and involvement in drug deals, just because of a 100 dollars. This lack of exploration of alternative solutions made their actions feel impulsive and unrealistic, undermining their unconditional love for each other. It was disappointing to see their potential for growth go unfulfilled. At first, I expected the story to explore addiction, redemption, and personal growth, especially through the main characters' family histories. But the introduction of their parents backstory felt disconnected from the rest of the narrative, leaving me confused. It seemed the author intended to imply that the parents' actions led to the kids' current struggles. However, since Skyler and Thebe were placed in foster care as infants, it's unclear how their parents' decisions directly impacted their present circumstances. This made it difficult to understand the relevance of the parents' story, and I couldn't help but wonder if their history was truly essential to the plot. Secondly, the story didn't quite live up to my expectations because at the start it seemed to be about Skyler as a central character but she seemed to be doing nothing with no character growth at all. While Thebe's character showed some growth, Skyler's passion for singing was hinted at but never fully explored. The story had potential for deeper character growth, but it wasn't fully realized. The ending was emotionally powerful but felt disappointing and sad. After seeing ...

The story revolves around two lovebirds whose bond is deeply rooted in shared trauma. They are each other’s world and can’t imagine life apart. Skyler, abandoned by her once-successful mother who fell into a spiral of drug addiction, finds herself with no choice but to survive alone. She meets Thebe in a foster home, and from there, their story unfolds. The novel offers captivating glimpses into the lives of its characters. Thebe, we get a peek into his traumatic past during a church gathering, where it’s revealed that he accidentally burned down his parents’ house while they were inside. This tragedy seems to drive his desire for redemption, shaping him into someone who seeks to do better and perhaps explains his poetic inclinations, a way of making up for his past sins. I particularly enjoyed how the paths of Thebe, Marcus, and Hot intertwine, leaving room for readers to piece together the details. The story builds up to a deadly conclusion that forces Thebe to confront the vanity of life. While the book is compelling, there are areas that could be improved. The introduction felt a bit too familiar—like another typical story of success followed by addiction. I think it would be more impactful if it delved deeper into Skyler’s personal struggle with addiction right away, weaving her story more seamlessly with Alexa’s. I also noticed a few mismatched chapters between 18 and 22 that could use some reworking. As a poetry lover, I was especially drawn to Thebe’s creative sketch at Club Paradise. His vivid imagination, especially the scene where he pictures the audience as naked, really hooked me. Overall, the novel highlights the resilience of people who rise from brokenness, often making poor choices along the way, but ultimately striving to make life work. Skyler’s strength in the face of Thebe’s death, her determination to move forward despite losing the love of her life, was a fitting conclusion. I’m looking forward to more from Bennie—loved it!

This was so heartbreaking😭I need Marcus's head on a platter!! I loved loved loved this book and I went through every single emotion while reading it, sadness, happiness, anger, you name it all. The romance was the most beautiful thing in the story. These lovely creatives who did everything to make it together, the pure love between them that they were willing to make the riskiest sacrifices for each other. And because of my love for music, I had to steal some of the albums and artists I discovered from here, for example, Goapele who I'm excited to get into her discography, and Kendrick Lamar's album Overly Dedicated that I'm also excited to listen. Also just to mention, I loved how they used the physical media instead of streaming platforms as their source of entertainment. I wonder if the placement of Chapter 22 was intentional though, coz I felt like it should have been after Chapter 18. I'm still struggling to come to terms with what happened in the end, but this book was definitely worth the time.

Hm where do I start, first off I must commend you Honestly, this book is a raw and unflinching portrayal of the harsh realities of life, love, and loss. I love the fact you didn’t shy away from exploring mature themes like violence, addiction, and grief, which makes for a gripping and emotional read(I resonate with it a lot considering I did used to be an addict) The characters are complex and multi-dimensional, with Skyler being a particularly compelling protagonist. Her journey from trauma to resilience is deeply moving and relatable. The writing style is descriptive and immersive, effectively conveying the characters' emotions and settings. However, there are moments where the pacing feels a bit uneven, and some scenes could be tightened up for better flow. Like there was a part in the book that lowkey threw the plot off, was slow paced and felt like lots of infodumping. This book is an ambitious but flawed effort to tackle complex themes like violence, addiction, and grief. While you show promises in crafting a narrative that's both haunting and hopeful, several issues hold the book back from reaching its full potential. One major concern is the pacing, which feels uneven and sometimes slow. Certain scenes drag on for too long, disrupting the flow of the story. Additionally, some plot threads feel underdeveloped or conveniently resolved. Characterization is another area where the book falls short. While Skyler is a compelling protagonist, other characters feel somewhat one-dimensional. Marcus, in particular, lacks depth and motivation beyond his role as the antagonist. The writing style, while descriptive and immersive at times, often relies on clichéd imagery and overly simplistic language. This detracts from the overall impact of the narrative and makes it feel less polished(I’d recommend Alternating POV because there were lots of showing and not telling rather than telling us you could implore ...

This beautiful novel delves into the dark yet profound depths of human struggles, relationships, and resilience. Through the intertwined stories of Alexa, Thebe, and Skyler, the author paints a raw and emotional picture of love, addiction, and redemption. The narrative is rich in detail, often immersing readers in vividly tragic yet gripping scenarios.

This story is a compelling tragedy. Everyone of the characters here has had nothing but bad luck at some point in their lives or is it a matter of poor background? Made the worst decision at the worst of times, leading them to spiral out of control. There are some things missing here and there about the syncing of the story to make it riveting, the flow and connection disappears sometimes.
